AI governance
AI governance for people decisions
If your organisation uses AI to recruit, assess or monitor people, governance stops being abstract. The EU AI Act sets a duty on AI literacy now and duties for high-risk AI in employment from 2 December 2027. This page sets out what that means in practice, and where to start.
What the EU AI Act asks
| Duty | What it means in practice | Applies |
|---|---|---|
| AI literacy (Article 4) | Take measures to support the AI literacy of staff who operate or use AI | Since 2 February 2025; amended July 2026 |
| High-risk AI in employment (Annex III, point 4) | AI for recruitment and selection, promotion, termination, task allocation and performance monitoring is high-risk | From 2 December 2027 |
| Human oversight (Article 26) | Oversight assigned to people with the competence, training and authority to act | From 2 December 2027 |
| Informing workers (Article 26) | Workers' representatives and affected workers are informed before high-risk AI is used at the workplace | From 2 December 2027 |

Questions your organisation should be able to answer
- Which AI systems touch hiring, performance or monitoring, including those inside vendor software?
- Who is accountable for each one, and who can stop it?
- Where does a person genuinely have the authority and the information to overrule the system?
- Do the people using these tools know what they do and where they fail?
- What would you show a candidate, an employee or a regulator who asked how a decision was made?
You cannot govern what you do not see.
